Understanding the Eight Prayer Watches
In James 5:16 (NIV), we are told that the “prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” As we pray, we stand watch over our families, cities, and nations. Just as men stood on city walls in the Bible to watch for approaching danger, God calls us to be modern-day watchmen and warn those who are in danger (2 Kings 9:17-18).
We are to watch not only for the enemy’s activity but also for the manifestation of God’s plans. If we watch for the enemy and announce his activity, we can avert the devil’s plans to steal, kill and destroy what God has for us. Jesus said in Matthew 24:43, “But know this, if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.”
Today more than ever, it is important that we pray and seek the mind of the Lord: “Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Major decisions we are confronted with require us to know God’s individual will for our lives.
What the Bible says:
With the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can discover God’s will and expose the plans of the enemy through strategic prayer.
The Bible speaks of “watches,” which are specific times of the day or night. There are basically eight watches covering 24 hours. This is because everyone has a prayer watch, even though they may not know it. This is why you may find yourself repeatedly praying at specific times of the day or evening. If you have ever been awakened during the night or are wondering why you are being led to pray at specific times, it is probably because God wants you to pray or intercede for someone. Every prayer watch has a purpose.

When are the Eight Prayer Watches?
First Watch
The Evening Watch from 6:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M.
Second Watch
From 9:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M.
Third Watch
The Breaking of Day Watch from 12:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M.
Fourth Watch
The Morning Watch from 3:00 A.M. to 6:00 A.M.
Fifth Watch
The Early Morning Watch from 6:00 A.M. – 9:00 A.M.
Sixth Watch
9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Seventh Watch
12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Eighth Watch
3:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.
1st Watch (6PM - 9PM)
Divine Beginnings for us…
First things first; Pray that we recover the People of God! The Lost sheep! No one is beyond His reach, and His love extends to all who seek Him.
• Luke 19:10: Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”1.
• Matthew 10:6: Jesus instructed His disciples, “but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”1.
• Ezekiel 34:16: God declares, “I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken, and strengthen the sick.”.
Principle: David recovered the people:
I Sam. 30:2: They took the women in it captive, from young to old. They did not kill anyone. Instead, they carried them off and went on their way. 3 David and his men came to the town, and it had been burned down. Their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.
2nd Watch (9PM - 12AM)
Divine Encounters-discern; may look different
Take note, some of God’s divine encounters will happen due to the enemies’ end-time agendas; Not all encounters will be personal encounters to you, but divine; nonetheless ….In spite of His long-suffering and mercy.
Divine Visitation in the Tower of Babel:
In Genesis 11:1-9, God comes down to see the Tower of Babel. This encounter results in the confusion of languages and the dispersion of people across the earth.
Pray for mercy: Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. Numbers 14:18.
The sins of the fathers are punished in the children through becoming the sins of the children.
But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers…if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob” (Leviticus 26:40-42).
Pray for Favor and divine visitations……
3rd Watch (12AM - 3AM)
Justice Warfare and Deliverance
“Behold, I am going to send for many fishermen,” declares the LORD, “and they will fish for them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them from every mountain and every hill and from the clefts of the rocks. Jeremiah 16:16
• The Immutable Father God is ultimately in control, and he is working all things according to the counsel of his own will (Eph1:11) even when evil men gain power over world governments.
• Ultimately it is God’s goal to bring many believers into the “measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine…” (Eph 4:13b, 14a).
• Pray that God will use all the evil that is coming upon the world to punish the wicked and bring maturity to the faithful. Part of this maturing in Christ involves confronting the evil spirit realm and triumphing over it even as Jesus did (Col 2:15).
4th Watch (3AM - 6AM)
Release of Divine Judgments
Jesus said, “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you” (Luke 11:20).
However, as we progress further into the chaos of these end times, we are going to have an “open heaven” even as Jesus promised to Nathanial in John 1 when he said, “Hereafter you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” To see into the spirit realm is not only to see angels, as Jesus promised Nathanial, but also to see the other spirits in that realm that are demons.
There will be a real shaking on the earth– Natural realm
The natural kingdom of earth is going to be breaking apart and we must enter into the spiritual kingdom of God. It will be a transition. Pray that the transition begins with a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ, a solid purity in our own life as we decrease and he increases in us, and gives knowledge of what the spiritual realm is like.
5th Watch (6AM - 9AM)
Empowerment for Ministry
Psalms 2:7-9 7 I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me
“You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.
Decree and declare in Prayer that the sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings-Malachi 4:2. Pray that there shall be healing in the prayer life, health, relationships, family, nation, economy and government.
Ministry entails: Acts 1:8; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all of Judea and Samaria and even the remotest part of the earth.
3 components- Preach- Teach – Be Witnesses
Mark 16:15- He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation
Matthew 28:19- Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
6th Watch (9AM - 12PM)
Tap into the Crucifixion
I will enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt (good news for our Apostolic Teams!) The desolate land shall be tiled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all… Ezekial 36:25-36
Can’t… So, they will say, “this land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.” (Truly living). Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, The Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, The Lord, have spoken it and I will do it!
When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, erected in the holy place, (let him that reads, mark this) Pray that we tap into the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Desolations.. will be seen in many forms today….
Spiritual desolation; political desolation; economical desolation; environmental desolations; etc.
7th Watch (12PM - 3PM)
Shake all Foundations
“It is time of exercising your God-given dominion, operating in love, receiving the divine lift, and letting your light shine brighter until the full light of day is attained. Pray that our lives would be brighter and expel all hidden satanic foundational agendas!
A Father’s Instruction: 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday. 19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom; they do not know what makes them stumble….
Pray that as we without fail recover all, we shall rise and shine as the glory of the Lord rises upon us, as we become the Kingdom of Priest that God has called us to be, and that then God, can lead the gentiles to our light, and the Kings to the brightness of our rising. *KOPCF Epistle 2024
The essence of this prayer is that we recognize what God has predestined to do within us, and that we do not allow anything to separate us, or cause division of contention amongst us. “Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every house divided against itself shall not stand! Mat 12:25
8th Watch (3PM - 6PM)
The Hour of Prayer Miracles
Miracles, an excellent means for awakening faith, and that for this purpose Jesus himself performed his miracles
“Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” (4.48); and against this reproach is set the praise of those who believe without seeing (John 20.29).
Pray that you and yours, the ones that He has chosen for such a time as this, restore the witness of the Lord, our God on the earth, and be an example of what it means to recover all! *KOPCF Epistle 2024; Miracles shows the witness of God.
The essence of this prayer is that we would henceforth be no more children, not as those who just demonstrate knowledge, but as sons of God whose oneness is demonstrated in such unfathomable ways that give evidence to not only what we’ve recovered but that everything that pertains to life and godliness has already been given unto us. We must become the witnesses of God’s power!
